The Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre (OCTC) is internationally known as a centre of excellence in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It has a uniquely rich concentration of acknowledged experts in CBT – some of whom are world leaders in the treatment of a number of mental health problems.

An opportunity has now arisen for suitably qualified Libyan psychiatrists and clinical psychologists to take part in CBT training that will equip them to use this evidence based psychotherapy in the treatment of a number of common psychological disorders including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression.

This is a short course comprising of 13 days initial training, spread over three months, but with ongoing supervision and other personal study elements that will continue for a year following the start of the training. Candidates who take part in the training will also be expected to participate in an evaluative study commencing two months after the completion of the last block of training.

The training will take place in Malta in September 2012 but all expenses (including course fees, flights and accommodation) are covered by the Libyan Foundation for Rehabilitation and the World Medical Camp, Libya

On the 19th Nov 2011, WMCL organised a children’s fashion show to raise money for new humanitarian projects in Libya. The children were dressed in an array of outfits, from traditional Libyan costume, to modern street wear inspired by themes, symbols, logos and colours from the Libyan revolution. The children looked adorable parading their outfits down the runway and drew loud cheers and applause from the audience.

After the fashion show, guests mingled and caught up with each other’s news. The event included stalls selling food, from savoury Libyan dishes such as couscous to treats that would satisfy the most ssweet-toothed fanciers such as cupcakes, brownies and basbusa.

There was also plenty to keep the children entertained with face-painting, arts and crafts and biscuit decorating stalls.

Entry fees to the children’s show and money collected from the stalls raised over £1700. This amazing amount will go towards WMCL’s new humanitarian projects which will include training psychology graduates to treat trauma patients in Libya. More information about our appeal for this project will be released soon. In the meantime, please read our power point presentation given during the event for an overview of our work: past current and future!

Thank you to everyone who attended the children’s fashion show, everyone who volunteered and a special thank you and shout out goes to WMCL volunteers Amani Elhouderi, Maisem Mabruk and Areej Shabani who designed, rehearsed and organised the clothes and the children. Not an easy task but they managed it all with style and a smile.

The donations and the great work of our volunteers on the ground in Libya has enabled the WMCL to make more of difference delivering aid to those who urgently need it.

At the start of October, a WMCL volunteer, Alla Baiou, organised a delivery of a variety of medical goods and equipment to Misrata. This included wheelchairs, crutches and braces. She was able to co-ordinate with the local suppliers in Tripoli, who either provided a discounted rate or donated the supplies and equipment.

Through her network of contacts, Alla was able to arrange storage, loading and swift delivery to Misrata. The goods arrived 48 hours later and were immediately put to use. Below is the list of supplies delivered:

¨ Wheelchairs (20 units)

¨ Crutches (120 units)

¨ External fixators (8 units)

¨ Plaster moulds for casts (200 rolls)

¨ Hinged knee braces (20 pieces)

¨ Knee supports (20 pieces)

¨ Ankle braces with supporters (20 pieces)

¨ Philadelphia collars (20 pieces)

¨ Soft collars (20 pieces)

¨ Dorsolumbar braces (20 pieces)

¨ Lumbosacral braces (20 pieces)

¨ Wrist brace splints (20 pieces)

¨ Finger splints (ra50 pieces)

¨ Arm slings (30 pieces)

The WMCL is also participating in readying a convoy of aid to Jufra. We will have further details regarding this convoy in the coming days.

Previously, the WMCL delivered vast quantities of medical and food supplies to Benghazi, Tobruk, Zwara, Nafusa Mountains,,Dheba, Tatawin, Misurata, Zintan, Sirte, Beni Walid, Ejdabiya, Rajban and Sebha.

Donations and aid in kind came from the UK, Jordan, Dubai, Ireland, Canada, Bahrain, Dubai, Tunisia, Egypt, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Malta,Spain, Germany, Greece and California.

Once again, the WMCL would like to extend its gratitude to all those who have been raising funds and making donations. Without this valuable support, it would not be possible for the WMCL to carry out it’s work on the ground.

South of Libya, Sirte and Bani Walid are now facing a health and environmental crisis. Thousands of injured young men, traumatized children and families still need help and support.

You can donate by visiting http://wmclibya.org/donate

WORLD MEDICAL CAMP FOR LIBYA (WMCL) ORGANISES A GATHERING OUTSIDE THE LIBYAN EMBASSY ON FRIDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER IN SUPPORT OF THE INJURED FREEDOM FIGHTERS

A gathering is being organised by the WMCL to be held out side the Libyan Embassy on Friday 23rd September 2011 between 6.00pm – 8.00pm. The gathering is in support of the injured freedom fighters who have been sent out of Libya, mainly to Tunisia, in order to receive specialist medical treatment for acute injuries. It has come to light that there is a lack of co-ordination in terms of the allocation of funds and resources for medical treatments, which has resulted in a number of serious issues. These issues have had an adverse affect on the treatment of the freedom fighters. The gathering aims to raise awareness of their situation and to reinforce this message to the Libyan Embassy in the UK, as well as to the National Transitional Council (NTC). Simultaneous gatherings are also being arranged by various volunteer groups in Libya to take place on the same day in Tripoli, Benghazi and Zwara, to start 5.00pm local time.

The WMCL volunteer members will publish an open letter on Friday 23 September for the attention of the charge d’affaires, Mahmud Nacua at the Libyan Embassy. The letter, to be delivered during the gathering in London, will urge Mr Nacua to help co-ordinate efforts alongside the NTC, in order to address the urgent needs of the freedom fighters. The main issues highlighted are as follows:

-To provide a clearer structure for the allocation and delivery of funds and resources, with a centralised system to maintain efficiency and control
-To improve co-ordination between Libya and Tunisia, in terms of the distribution of the injured to different hospitals
-To establish a central database of who has been allocated where, the exact number of people injured and the number of people admitted in each of the hospitals
-To ensure that the freedom fighters are not left stranded in the hospitals, once they had completed their treatment and in some cases, unable to pay their medical bills
-To ensure an efficient transfer of the treated individuals out of hospitals and to make available space for those newly injured freedom fighters to take their places in the hospitals (currently the newly injured face an unnecessarily long wait)
-To send out designated teams from Libya to each of the hospitals to look after the needs of each group of the injured
-To ensure that the injured who require acute or specialist treatment are sent on to other hospitals in Europe

The WMCL is a London-based charity set-up in response to the humanitarian crisis in Libya. The charity is run by a group of volunteers whose aim is to raise much needed funds and to deliver urgent medical aid to the hospitals dealing with the seriously injured. The charity also works to secure donations to help in the sheltering, feeding and clothing of children, many of whom have been orphaned, as well as other vulnerable groups affected by the crisis. Aid and funds raised also contribute towards the support, rehabilitation and after care of the victims.

Ghassan Atiga, a WMCL member who has recently returned from Libya and has seen first hand the price that was paid by many who scarified their lives, as well as those who have been seriously injured, says “The whole world has watched the bravery of thousands of Libyans who sacrificed everything to gain Libya’s freedom. Let us show the world our solidarity with our injured heroes; without them we wouldn’t have a free Libya. We urge the NTC and all humanitarian agencies to work together to bring the issue of the injured freedom fighters as a top priority. Healing the wounds is what we are here for.”
The WMCL welcomes the support of members of the public and other agencies to join in gathering on Friday 23rd September in solidarity with the injured freedom fighters.
